MEND

Mind     Exercise    Nutrition      Do it!

MEND - an integrated, multi- disciplinary approach to tackling obesity and overweight with children aged 7 - 13 years.

The programme works with children and a parent or carer combining all the elements known to be vital in treating and preventing overweight and obesity in children, including family involvement, practical education in nutrition, increasing physical activity and behavioural change. With an emphasis on practical, fun learning, the programme is designed to deliver sustained improvements in families' diets, fitness levels and overall health.

MEND was developed in 2002 by child obesity experts from Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.  A pilot study was carried out 2004 - 05 with a random controlled trial 2005 - 07. What began as a research project has become a replicable, cost-effective and scalable prevention and intervention for childhood obesity.

Poltair School Sport Partnership will be the first area in Cornwall to provide this exciting initiative. MEND programmes will be offered in all the Partnership Secondary School families.
